‘An unusual superhero’

Director Nila Madhab Panda is working on a biopic on APJ Abdul Kalam

“We have lost the biggest hero of our generation. My father lived in the times of Gandhi and Shastri, I can proudly say that I met APJ Abdul Kalam,” says Nila Madhab Panda, whose I Am Kalam is the former President’s only connection with the celluloid. “He took no time in approving the script and when we showed him the film at Rajaji Marg residence on a projector, he made a rare exception and watched the film. He said the film pushes his idea that every kid should be allowed toDREAM.” Panda laments that we eulogise our heroes when they are no more. “The true tribute to Kalam is to ensure that no child begs on the street and no child has to work. He called our population an asset and only education can make this asset worthwhile. I plead with the political leadership to ensure that his dream comes true.”
Recalling hisASSOCIATION with Kalam, Panda says he was essentially a teacher. “He would say two sentences and then ask us to repeat. When I first entered his room, he said, ‘you have a good smile. It means your soul is also good.’ He had this ability to lift your spirit.” Panda says when he was scripting I Am Kalam, aMARKETING professional told him to put a person who has the maximum brand value. “He suggested film stars and sportspersons but I always wanted Kalam to be the inspiration. Our popular culture has not been kind to scientists.” His faith proved true when during the opening ceremony of Commonwealth Games, the moment Kalam entered the arena, the entire stadium gave him a standing ovation. “The biggest of stars and sportspersons were present at the ground but the applause and respect for Kalam was something different.”
Panda now wants to make a biopic on the Missile Man. “Now that he is not there to take his vision forward, we have to make an attempt. He is an unusual superhero who makes missiles but at the same times talks of peace. He stood againstCAPITAL punishment. In a society which judges you by your surname and didn’t spare even Gandhiji from religious motives, Kalam bypassed the bracket of region and religion. I want to focus on his childhood because having myself come from a humble background I can relate to it,” says Panda.
